National Museum of the Great Lakes, Toledo

National Museum of the Great Lakes, Toledo (must see)

The National Museum of the Great Lakes, situated in the Toledo Maritime Center on the banks of the Maumee River, is a testament to the rich maritime heritage of the North American Great Lakes. Operated by the Great Lakes Historical Society, the museum offers a unique perspective on the natural and constructed heritage of the Great Lakes from a U.S. standpoint. One of its most notable features is the SS Col. James M. Schoonmaker, a museum Lake freighter launched in 1911. This historic vessel, with its riveted plates and pre-radar pilothouse, provides a fascinating glimpse into the technology and maritime practices of the early 20th century. The freighter is open to the public during the warmer months, allowing visitors to explore this floating piece of history.

The museum plays a crucial role in the discovery, identification, and preservation of sunken ships in Lake Erie. Advances in maritime technology have enabled the museum to locate and study an increasing number of these submerged vessels, particularly those constructed before 1900. By examining these shipwrecks, historians and maritime archaeologists can uncover details about boatbuilding techniques and maritime experiences that are not documented in historical records. This ongoing research effort helps to deepen our understanding of the Great Lakes' maritime history and its impact on the region's development.

Opened on April 26, 2014, the museum's riverfront structure celebrates both the natural and man-made heritage of the Great Lakes. The primary displays, including meticulously crafted model ships, guide visitors through 350 years of navigation history. Physical memorabilia, such as rigging, machinery, and the cutlery and chinaware used by the Great Lakes' bygone fleet of steam packets and passenger liners, provide tangible connections to the past.

The National Museum of the Great Lakes is open year-round, welcoming visitors to immerse themselves in the rich maritime history of the region.
