National University of Ireland, Galway
The National University of Ireland in Galway, also known as N.U.I Galway, is a historic and vibrant institution located on University Road, in the heart of Galway city centre. The university was established in 1849 as Queen’s College Galway and became part of The Queen’s University of Ireland a year later, alongside Queen’s University Belfast and University College Cork.
Today, the university has approximately 15,000 students, studying in one of seven faculties, including law, medicine and health sciences, celtic studies, engineering, commerce, science, and arts. Visitors to the university can take a leisurely stroll around the campus, which stretches along the River Corrib.
One of the highlights of the campus is the quadrangle, which is a replica of Christ Church from the University of Oxford and is the oldest part of the university in Galway.
Aside from its rich history and architecture, the National University of Ireland in Galway boasts a strong student and social network. With over 80 societies and 60 sports clubs, students have many opportunities to get involved in extracurricular activities. Some of the oldest societies on campus include the Literarty & Debating Society, founded in 1846, and Cumann Staire, which focuses on historical studies.
Over the years, the university has produced several famous alumni, including Henry Arthur Blake, who served as governor of Hong Kong, President Michael D. Higgins, and Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
