Natural History Museum, Aarhus

The Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisk Museum) in Aarhus is a notable institution dedicated to natural history. Positioned within the Aarhus University campus in the Midtbyen district, it is an independent entity funded by the Ministry of Culture, Aarhus Municipality, Aarhus University, and visitor revenues.

The museum's history traces back to 1838 when it started with two rooms in the Aarhus Cathedral School. It gradually evolved into an independent institution in the early 20th century, influenced by local efforts to establish a university. The museum's establishment is closely tied to these educational developments, and in 1941, it relocated to university grounds in a building designed by architect C.F. Møller, enabling easy access for students and faculty.

Today, the Natural History Museum conducts significant research, particularly in entomology, freshwater ecology, earth biology, fauna, and bioacoustics. It operates the Mole Laboratory, a field laboratory and education center in Mols Bjerge National Park, which supports its research activities.

The museum boasts one of Denmark's largest collections, second only in size and scope to the national collections, with extensive specimens of mammals, birds, skeletons, animal tracks, springtails, mollusks, and corals. Although most of the collection is preserved for research, parts are accessible to the public through four permanent and several rotating special exhibitions. The museum serves both the scientific community and the general public, fostering a deeper understanding of natural history through its educational offerings and research initiatives.
