Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai High school, Saigon/HoChiMinh City
Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai High School, also known as Gia Long all-girls school, is a public high school located in Ho Chi Minh City. The school was founded back in 1913 and is highly regarded within the Vietnamese education system. It takes its name from Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, a Vietnamese revolutionary and a leader of the Indochinese Communist Party during the 1930s.
In the early 20th century, traditional Confucian education in Vietnam didn't prioritize the education of women. In 1908, a group of Vietnamese intellectuals proposed the construction of a comprehensive school for girls under the French colonial administration. Although the proposal was eventually approved, a shortage of funds delayed the project until 1913 when construction began on a spacious site along Legrand de la Liraye Street in Saigon. By 1915, the school's construction was completed, and it began admitting its first students.
In 1975, the school underwent an official name change to Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai Junior-Senior High School. During the 1978–1979 school year, the Junior High School section was dissolved, and the school started admitting both boys and girls. In 2003, the school was recognized as one of the 55 historical and architecturally significant buildings in Sài Gòn, now Ho Chi Minh City, slated for preservation.
Additionally, there is a special village named Gia Long, established since 2000, located about 20 kilometers away from Ho Chi Minh City. This village serves as a retirement community for former teachers and students of Áo Tím - Gia Long - Minh Khai, providing them a place to gather and spend their golden years.
