Nicholas Tower, Port of Spain

Nicholas Tower, Port of Spain

Nicholas Tower is a prominent 21-story office building located on Independence Square in Port of Spain. Standing 88 meters tall (102 meters including the mast), it is the fifth tallest structure in the country and a defining feature of the downtown waterfront business district. The building was completed in 2003 and remains an architectural landmark due to its sleek, elliptical design and blue glass façade.

The tower was constructed on the site of the historic Trinidad Union Club, a private institution that had been in operation for 136 years. Until 2015, the club occupied the penthouse suite of the building. The structure is supported by 357 prestressed concrete piles and features a four-story podium that occupies the entire site. Above the podium, a 16-story curved, glazed tower is positioned diagonally, offering a visually striking profile.

Designed to meet advanced structural engineering standards of the time, the building incorporates a structural steel frame with composite steel decking and concrete infill, enhanced by a sprinkler system for safety. The façade features a specialized glass curtain wall developed with input from ABEL/Bestcrete and their Canadian partners, Fulton, creating a seamless envelope around the tower.

Each floor of the building offers 8,000 square feet (approximately 700 square meters) of rentable space. Notable tenants of Nicholas Tower have included the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange, Caribbean Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, and various government offices such as the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Office of the Prime Minister.
