Nizami Monument, Baku
The Nizami Monument, dedicated to the renowned medieval Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi, stands prominently in Baku, at the bustling Nizami Square where Istiglaliyyat, Ahmad Javad, Azerbaijan, and Islam Safarli streets intersect. Unveiled in April 1949, the monument celebrates Nizami's significant contributions to Persian literature.
Crafted by Fuad Abdurahmanov, a celebrated People’s Artist of Azerbaijan, the statue reaches a height of 6 meters and is constructed from bronze. It is mounted atop a 9-meter high octahedral pedestal made from red Labrador, a material that enhances the monument's grandeur. The design of the pedestal incorporates elements of Azerbaijani architecture from Nizami's era, reflecting the cultural and historical context of his works.
The pedestal is adorned with ornamental carvings and faced with bronze plates on its lower section. These plates are artistically significant as they depict seven scenes from Nizami’s literary works, offering a visual representation of his narratives. An additional plate bears a memorial inscription, serving as a tribute to the poet's enduring legacy. This monument not only commemorates Nizami Ganjavi's literary genius but also stands as a symbol of Azerbaijani cultural pride.
