North Reformed Church, Newark

The North Reformed Church, located on Broad Street in Newark, New Jersey, is a historic site with deep roots in the city's cultural and spiritual life. Organized on December 16, 1856, as the Third Reformed Dutch Church, it quickly became a central gathering place for Newark’s elite. The cornerstone of the church was laid in September 1857, and construction followed swiftly, embodying the Gothic architectural style that makes it a standout feature in the cityscape.

The church’s Gothic design is marked by buttressed walls and detailed parapets, culminating in a spire that reaches 165 feet into the skyline. This spire, along with features like a pulpit framed by an arch and a luminous cupola, highlights the church's architectural elegance. The building was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, cementing its status as an architectural and historical treasure.

Throughout its history, the North Reformed Church has faced challenges, including significant damage from fires in 1922 and 1931.
