Norwegian Church, Swansea

Norwegian Church, Swansea

The Norwegian Church in Swansea originally served as a place of worship for Norwegian sailors. Initially located in Newport, the church was relocated to Swansea's docklands in 1910. The building, which consisted of a Seaman’s Mission on the west side and a Gothic-style church on the east, was specifically built for Norwegian sailors visiting the UK. Its new site was positioned near the River Tawe, directly across from a Sainsbury's supermarket.

In 1966, the Norwegian Seamen's Mission in Bergen decided to cease operations and asked the last minister, Pastor Somerset, to return to Norway. However, Eric Benneche, a Norwegian expatriate in Swansea, petitioned the Bishop of Bergen to keep the church open, volunteering to run it himself. The Bishop agreed, personally handing over the keys to the church, and Benneche began leading services as a lay pastor. After Benneche, Reverend Vivian James took over in 1968, preaching in both English and Norwegian until his retirement in 1998. This marked the end of the church as the last operational Seamen’s Mission Church.

In 2004, as part of the area’s redevelopment, the Norwegian Church was dismantled and relocated once more to a site near Swansea's Prince of Wales dock. It reopened, this time repurposed as a jewelry gallery, and later, as a nursery. The building now sits next to two other listed structures, the Ice House and J Shed, preserving its historical significance.
