Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, Halifax
The Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame (NSSHF) was founded on November 3, 1964, by former Halifax mayor John E. Ahern, to celebrate the province’s most remarkable athletes, teams, and sport builders. Initially backed by a government grant, the Hall of Fame’s first Board of Directors selected a prestigious group of inductees, including Aileen Meagher, Johnny Miles, Sam Langford, and George Dixon.
Ahern’s deep passion for sports led him to assemble an extensive collection of Nova Scotian sports memorabilia and photographs—the largest single donation to the Hall—which shaped the foundation of its exhibits. Over the years, the Hall has relocated multiple times, eventually finding a home at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax.
The facility showcased a dynamic collection of sports history, including interactive exhibits and historical artifacts that captured the spirit of Nova Scotia’s rich sporting legacy. However, on September 30, 2020, the museum space closed, marking a transition to a new location. In the meantime, the Hall of Fame continues its mission through its website, where visitors can explore its extensive digital collection, inductee history, and educational programs. As a not-for-profit organization, the NSSHF remains committed to honoring Nova Scotia’s sports excellence through annual inductions, community programs, and special events.

Halifax Introduction Walking Tour
Halifax is located on the ancestral lands of the Mi'kmaq who lived in the area long before Europeans arrived. Mi'kmaq called the area "Great Harbor". The city itself was established by the British in 1749 in violation of treaties with the Mi'kmaq. The establishment of the city led to Father le Loutre's War, otherwise known as the Anglo-Micmac War.
