Nykirken (The New Church), Bergen

The New Church (Nykirken), also traditionally known as Holy Trinity Church, is a historic parish church situated in the Nordnes area of Bergen. Part of the Church of Norway, it falls within the Bergen Cathedral parish in the Bergen arch-deanery of the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The church, which dates back to its initial consecration in 1622, stands prominently at the New Church Community Square (Nykirkeallmenningen), nestled between Strandgaten Road and Vågen Bay.

The structure is a large, white, stone cruciform church known for its strategic location and architectural significance. Although consecrated as Holy Trinity Church, the nickname "Nykirken," meaning "The New Church," was adopted due to its relative newness compared to other ancient churches in Bergen at the time. This nickname also reflects its history of multiple reconstructions, most notably following a series of devastating fires. The current building has stood since 1764, having been completely rebuilt and redesigned after one such major fire, and has undergone several significant renovations since.

Today, the New Church continues to function as an active church, with a specific focus on serving children and their families. Reflecting this mission, it has been rebranded as the "Children's Cathedral," emphasizing its role in catering to the spiritual and community needs of young parishioners and their families. This designation underscores its unique position within the community as a center for youth-oriented Christian education and activities.

It is a wonder Bergen has had so many fires in its history, considering it has averaged 200 days a year of rain. So, why the fires?

Flames leapt across the narrow streets. The compact wooden buildings were easy prey. In 1702 90% of the city was destroyed. Disasters continued through the years. Finally, in 1916, a new idea in prevention emerged. The way to stop a fire was to starve it.

Bergen's Architectural Jewels

Surprising as it may appear, but the seemingly small city of Bergen for centuries had been the largest in all of the Nordic countries. It also remained so for Norway until the 1830s. Apart from being the country's former capital (back in the 13th century), Bergen is well-known primarily for its astoundingly beautiful cityscape, formed by the backdrop of mountains and serene waterfront, much...  view more
