Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans
Housed within an elegant five-story building, this museum is dedicated to showcasing art created by Southern artists or themed around the American South. Its foundation lies in a collection of 1,200 artworks assembled by local developer Roger Ogden, starting in the 1960s. Over the years, this collection has expanded to encompass more than 4,000 pieces, including paintings, ceramics, drawings, sculptures, photographs, and designs. These artworks, as well as special exhibitions, highlight the creative talents of artists from Washington, D.C., and 15 Southern states, spanning the 18th through the 21st century.
The museum's central stair atrium bathes the galleries in natural light, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors to explore the diverse array of art on display. The rooftop patio serves as a sculpture garden, offering beautiful views of the surrounding area. Additionally, the museum features the Center for Southern Craft and Design store, which boasts ceramics, glasswork, jewelry, and books by and about Southern artists. On Thursday nights from 6 to 8 pm, the museum comes alive with "Ogden After Hours," an event that includes live music, artist interviews, refreshments, children's activities, and special gallery exhibitions.
