Ohio House, Philadelphia

The Ohio House, also known as the Ohio State Building, is a historic American structure located in west Fairmount Park. This notable building holds a special place in the city's architectural and cultural history. It is recognized on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places and forms part of the inventory of the Fairmount Park Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

Constructed primarily from various types of Ohio sandstones, the Ohio House was originally built as the Ohio state exhibit for the Centennial Exposition of 1876. This exposition was a key event in American history, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the nation's independence. The Ohio House is particularly significant as it is the only remaining state exhibit structure from this historic exposition. Other surviving structures from the event include Memorial Hall and two small comfort stations.

In preparation for the United States Bicentennial in 1976, the Ohio House underwent a meticulous restoration process. This rejuvenation highlighted its historical significance and architectural beauty. In 2006, the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust leased the building to Ohio House Partners, who carried out further extensive restoration work.

Since its reopening to the public in November 2007, the Ohio House has served multiple functions. It operates as a cafe, providing a unique dining experience in a historic setting. Additionally, it is a sought-after event venue, offering a distinctive backdrop for various gatherings. The building also houses offices, thus continuing its legacy as a versatile and vibrant part of Philadelphia's historical landscape.
