Old Catholic Church, Hague
The Old Catholic hidden church of the H.H. James and Augustine, nestled in the heart of The Hague, has a rich history dating back to its completion in 1722. Initially a secret church, it symbolizes a time when Catholic worship was prohibited in the region from 1578. However, with the gradual tolerance of Catholicism around 1640, the community, previously congregating in a pastor's house, was permitted to construct a dedicated church building.
This church, named after saints James and Augustine, first held a worship service in 1722. Over the next decade, the building was embellished, transforming into one of the Netherlands' most exquisite hidden churches. Its architecture, often attributed to Daniël Marot in folklore, was actually designed by Nicolaas Kruysselbergen. The interior is distinguished by its unique stucco ceiling, unparalleled in the country, and features a splendid altar retable with intricate carvings and an altarpiece created in 1734 by M. Terwesten.
The church's decor includes a communion rail and a pulpit designed by J.B. Xavery, complemented by a marble holy water basin adorned with reliefs. The altar, the church's focal point, is graced by Matthias Terwesten's painting depicting the Transfiguration on the mountain and sculptures by Johannes Claudius de Cock. Flanking the altar are statues of Mary with Christ and Joseph, topped by a haloed cross supported by angels, symbolizing the Last Judgment.
Today, the Old Catholic hidden church, besides being a place of worship, opens for public viewing in July and August and is available for rent for weddings, concerts, and other events. This historic church stands as a testament to the perseverance of faith and the beauty of religious artistry in the Netherlands.
