Old Civil Registry (Oude Civiele Griffie), Brugge
The Old Civil Registry (Oude Civiele Griffie) is a historic landmark and one of the oldest Renaissance buildings in Flanders. Its construction was completed in 1537, and it served as the residence of the clerk-civil, a highly important city official during that time. The building's facade is entirely made of natural stone and features elaborate sculptures as decorations. These bronze statues, created by the renowned Bruges sculptor Hendrik Pickery, were added in 1883, further enhancing the building's aesthetic appeal.
Over the years, the Old Civil Registry has undergone three major restorations to preserve its historical significance. The first restoration took place between 1877 and 1881 and was overseen by the city architect Louis Delacenserie. Delacenserie meticulously renewed and added sculptures, decorations, and polychromy to restore the building to its original 16th-century splendor.
In 1980, the facades of the Old Civil Registry were cleaned as part of a maintenance effort. This cleaning process helped to revitalize the exterior appearance of the building, preparing it for future restoration and preservation.
A significant scientific investigation was conducted between 1993 and 1996 to better understand the original colors and design elements of the Old Civil Registry. The findings from this investigation paved the way for the third restoration, which took place in 2001. The aim of this restoration was to replicate the building's original vibrant colors, restoring it to its former glory.
Recognizing its historical value, the Old Civil Registry was designated as a protected monument in 1942. Additionally, in September 2009, it was officially recognized as an established architectural heritage site, solidifying its significance within the cultural landscape of Bruges.
Despite its age and historical importance, the Old Civil Registry continues to serve a practical purpose in the present day. It is currently utilized by the city council of Bruges.
