Old Mission Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara

Old Mission Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara (must see)

Old Mission Santa Barbara dates back to 1786 and is home to an active community of Franciscan Friars. This property spans about 15 acres, offering plenty for visitors to see. The community has a tradition of radical hospitality that warmly welcomes all guests.

Self-guided tours are available that give visitors the chance to see whatever interests them the most. The mission's grounds include multiple, beautifully-maintained gardens. There is a museum on-site that has nine rooms filled with artifacts and artwork that help tell the mission's story.

This mission is host to a cemetery and mausoleum, where the burial places are given the care that the Franciscan tradition demands. The mausoleum underwent a renovation in 2011 that included niches for cremains. The cremains of people of any faith may be inurned here.

The Mission Gift Shop offers a range of gifts, from traditional religious gifts to artwork and body care. Many of the items available have been crafted by members of the community. These items help support the life of the community and its members.

Visitors will also enjoy seeing St. Barbara Parish, the parish associated with the mission. Weekday masses are available three days a week, and there is a Saturday vigil service, as well as three Sunday masses. All are welcome at these services, and visitors can also see the church as a part of the regular tours.
