Old Palace, Belgrade
The Old Palace in Belgrade, known locally as Stari Dvor, is a historic architectural gem that once served as the royal residence for the Obrenović and Karađorđević dynasties. Constructed between 1882 and 1884, the palace is situated at the strategic corner of Kralja Milana and Dragoslava Jovanovića streets, directly facing the New Palace (Novi dvor). This majestic building was designed by Aleksandar Bugarski in the academism style of the 19th century, aiming to surpass all previous residences of Serbian rulers.
Currently, the Old Palace houses the City Assembly of Belgrade, and its doors are open to visitors who can explore its rich history through guided tours available via tourist stands throughout the city. This initiative allows both locals and tourists alike to immerse themselves in the palace's splendid architectural and historical details.
The palace's design emphasizes a classical aesthetic with a nearly square foundation measuring 40x40 meters. Its noteworthy features include a central windowed inner hall, around which various significant rooms are arranged, such as the grand reception hall, dining room, a well-arranged library, and a palace chapel facing the garden. Originally, the palace also boasted a greenhouse and intricately ornamented oaken stairs designed by Jovan Ilkić, although these were destroyed during World War I.
The external architecture of the Old Palace is considered one of the finest examples of academism in Serbia. The facade facing the garden is particularly elaborate, adorned with projecting balconies that enhance interaction with the garden setting. Additionally, caryatids and Doric columns add to the classical appeal, supporting the richly designed tympanums above. Despite some simpler facades, the overall structure remains cohesive and visually striking, featuring rustic basement designs, balustraded balconies and attics, and domes that once graced its corners.
