Old West Church, Boston
Established in 1737, Old West Church holds a rich and storied history in Boston. Over the centuries, it has served various roles in the community, transitioning from a church to a library from 1896 to 1961. Beyond its physical functions, the church has also been a vital gathering space and its sermons have played a significant role in American history.
One notable historical moment occurred during the tenure of Jonathan Mayhew, the church's second Congregational pastor. It was here that he coined the famous phrase, "no taxation without representation", which would become a rallying cry during the American Revolution. In the 1850s, Minister Charles Lowell, another figure associated with the church, advocated passionately for the abolition of slavery and an end to racial segregation.
In 1971, Old West Church, which is the second church built on this site, received the designation of a Historical Landmark. That same year, the internationally acclaimed organ, crafted by Charles B. Fisk, was completed and dedicated on Easter Sunday. This organ is widely recognized as one of the finest contemporary instruments of its kind in the world.
Today, the Old West Organ Society (OWOS) regularly hosts organ concerts throughout the year, offering visitors a chance to enjoy intimate choral or instrumental performances in this historic setting. For specific concert dates and information, please check online.
