Olmsted Park, Boston

Olmsted Park is a linear park that forms a part of the larger Emerald Necklace, connecting to the Fenway area on its northern side. This verdant space is a beloved destination for people of all ages, offering a variety of attractions and activities amidst its lush landscape. Originally known as Leverett Park, it was renamed Olmsted Park in 1900 in honor of its designer, Frederick Law Olmsted. The renowned landscape architect was commissioned to create a series of urban parks in Boston, drawing inspiration from his previous work in New York and Chicago. As a Romantic naturalist influenced by philosophers like Rousseau and poets like Wordsworth, Olmsted believed in the restorative power of nature and saw his parks as an escape from the challenges and stresses of urban life. He transformed much of Boston's underutilized open spaces, often marshlands, into meticulously landscaped outdoor havens for city dwellers to enjoy.
