Olympic Oval, Calgary

During the 1988 Winter Olympics, the speed skating event was held at the Olympic Oval. Located at the University of Calgary campus, this venue is today one of the most popular training center for the Canadian National Speed Skating team and Speed Skate Canada.

Olympic Oval features two Zamboni ice resurfacers that operate on propane. Other prominent features of this skating rink include high altitude and state of art facility to control climate.

Celebrations and exciting activities will be held at the Olympic Ova in 2012 to commemorate its 25th year of service. One of the first facilities to be completely covered, this skating oval allowed for effective climate control and great quality ice.

At the 1988 Winter Olympics, Olympic Oval saw skaters setting world records in at least seven events. Olympic records were set in an additional three events. Fast ice surface is predominantly due to the high altitude and climate control feature. Since the time of its establishment fourteen years ago, this facility has seen skaters setting many speed records.

Today it is popularly referred to as “The fastest ice in the world”. 12 world records are currently being held here. Make sure you pay a visit to this premier skating venue on your trip to Calgary.
