One Indiana Square Tower, Indianapolis
One Indiana Square Tower, commonly referred to as the Regions Tower, is a striking 36-story skyscraper located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Since its completion in 1970, the building has been a significant part of the city’s skyline, initially serving as the headquarters for the Indiana National Bank and now as the Indiana headquarters for Regions Financial Corporation. The tower prominently displays the region's name and logo, cementing its role as a landmark of corporate activity.
The building occupies the southern half of a block bordered by Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, and Ohio Streets. Its design features a multi-story base topped by a sleek tower, with a façade that originally boasted dark-tinted glass. A recessed area beneath the tower creates a sheltered promenade on the western, northern, and southern sides, supported by marble-clad square columns, adding a touch of sophistication. The project necessitated the rerouting of Massachusetts Avenue and the demolition of notable buildings, such as the historic Knights of Pythias Building.
The tower’s exterior has undergone multiple renovations over the decades due to weather damage, including severe tornado-strength winds in 2006. The most recent remodeling introduced a contemporary light-blue curtain wall designed by Gensler of San Francisco. This transparent façade enhances the building's modern aesthetic and functionality. Additionally, an investment in a state-of-the-art LED lighting system allows the tower to illuminate the Indianapolis skyline with vibrant displays.
One Indiana Square’s evolution reflects both its resilience and its capacity to adapt to modern architectural trends, securing its status as a cornerstone of Indianapolis’s downtown identity.
