Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers' Co-operative, Anchorage

Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers' Co-operative, Anchorage

The Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers’ Co-operative in Anchorage is a unique co-op that has been bringing the luxurious warmth of qiviut garments to the world since 1969. Owned by around 250 Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages, each item is hand-knitted with care and tradition. Qiviut, pronounced “kiv-ee-ute,” is the downy underwool of the Arctic musk ox, shedding naturally each spring. Known for its softness, warmth-eight times that of wool-and resistance to shrinkage, qiviut is one of the world’s rarest and finest natural fibers.

Each village contributes its heritage through signature patterns, often inspired by artifacts or beadwork unique to their Eskimo culture. From ancient carvings to ceremonial designs, these motifs tell stories through scarves, hats, tunics, and smoke rings that capture the spirit of the Alaskan tundra. The Oomingmak Co-operative not only preserves traditional craftsmanship but also supports the Native artisans' way of life, offering supplementary income that allows them to stay in their communities.

Visit the Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers' Co-operative to explore this remarkable collection of qiviut garments-a gift that embodies Alaska’s cultural richness and enduring warmth.

As a perfect basecamp for exploring much of what Alaska has to offer, Anchorage is the font of the state’s history. The Downtown’s convenient grid pattern – compact enough to be walked by curious visitors ready to explore the 49th state's largest and most important city – was set up at the same time as the construction started on the Government Hill neighborhood in 1915.
