Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Kansas City

Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Kansas City

Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, nestled in the midtown area of Kansas City, stands as a testament to the enduring faith and dedication of its community. Founded in 1890 by German Catholics who sought a new parish amidst a growing population, the church has a rich history that reflects the resilience and commitment of its early parishioners. Initially, Masses were held in a modest venue known as "Doherty’s Hall," but the community's vision soon led them to purchase land and construct a church on the grounds of what would later become Union Station.

When the railroad required the land for its new station, the parish made the bold decision to move the church, brick by brick, up the hill to its present location. This resourceful spirit saw the original bricks repurposed to build a school and chapel until a grand new church was completed in 1922. By its 50th anniversary in 1940, Our Lady of Sorrows had become more than just a striking structure with its towers reaching skyward; it was a symbol of perseverance, embodying the sacrifices and devotion of those who had come before.

Today, the parish continues to honor the legacy of its founders by serving the faithful and providing the sacraments, with a commitment to being a vibrant presence of Christ in Kansas City. As they strive to uphold the traditions and faith of those who came before, the current members of Our Lady of Sorrows are also creating a legacy for future generations, ensuring that this historic church remains a beacon of hope and faith in the community for years to come.
