Palacio de Gelmirez (Gelmirez Palace), Santiago de Compostela

The Gelmirez Palace is the former episcopal palace of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The palace was constructed by Diego Gelmírez, who served as the Archbishop of Santiago from 1120 to 1136. While only the communication doors connecting the palace with the basilica remain from the original building, these doors hold historical significance. They include the Gramáticos door, the Torre door, and the tribune door.

Aligned with the Romanesque western façade of the cathedral, the building stands tall with three floors. Upon entering, one can catch a glimpse of the original Romanesque portico, although it is now concealed behind an 18th-century façade. The ground floor accommodates the Hall of Arms, which features a vestibule adjacent to the cathedral tower and a palace arch to the north. Inside this room, columns divide the space into two aisles consisting of four slender columns each, forming a total of five sections. The Hall of Arms is adorned with elegant groin vaults, adding to its architectural grandeur.

For a period, the Gelmirez Palace served as the temporary headquarters of the Parliament of Galicia. It held this role from its establishment on December 19, 1981, until the summer of 1982 when the parliament was relocated to the Fonseca Palace. Currently, the palace has been repurposed as a museum and is integrated within the Museum of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

Legend has it that after Saint James, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, was martyred in Jerusalem in 44 AD, his followers carried his decapitated body by sea to Spain. Others claim that the saintly remains were miraculously taken up by angels and sailed to the coast of Galicia, where a massive rock closed around it and was later moved to its final resting place.
