Palacio del Marqués de Arcos (Palace of the Marquis of Arcos), Havana

The Palace of the Marquis of Arcos (Palacio del Marqués de Arcos) is a historical and architectural monument in Old Havana, embodying the rich cultural and architectural heritage of the island. Situated adjacent to the Palace of the Count of Lombillo (Palacio del Conde de Lombillo) in Cathedral Square, this building is a prime example of 18th-century residential architecture in Cuba, renowned for its Baroque style and historical significance.

Constructed in 1741 by Ignacio de Peñalver y de Cárdenas, the father of the first Marquis of Arcos, the palace is a testament to the family's prominent role in supporting the Spanish Crown, especially during the English army's occupation of Cuba. This support was instrumental in earning the Marquisate title in 1742. The palace's design features two distinct facades, with the main one facing Calle de la Merced, adorned with elaborate balconies, Doric column arches, and an elegant Italianate staircase inside, marking it as a key piece of Cuban Baroque architecture.

Throughout its history, the Palace of the Marquis of Arcos has served various roles, from a post office to the Artistic and Literary Lyceum, reflecting its versatile use over centuries. Presently, it houses the Havana Experimental Graphics Workshop (Taller Experimental de la Gráfica de La Habana), a cultural hub where artists, predominantly Cuban, create and sell prints such as silkscreens, etchings, and lithographs at accessible prices.

Moreover, the palace now includes public spaces like a digital art room and a literary café, enhancements provided by the Historian's Office of Havana. These additions have transformed the palace into a vibrant cultural venue, allowing visitors to engage with Cuban art and history intimately.
