Palazzo Marescalchi (Marescalchi Palace), Bologna
Originally constructed upon pre-existing buildings in 1466, this palace underwent a complete reconstruction and expansion in 1613. Following the demise of the male lineage of the Dall'Armi family in the subsequent year, ownership transferred due to the marriage of Eleonora Dall'Armi to Vincenzo Marescalchi. In 1777, the palace underwent further reconstruction and enlargement, particularly on its eastern side, which necessitated the acquisition of adjacent buildings to facilitate expansion. This expansion led to the creation of a small square on the eastern side of the palace. Later, this section of the building, along with the small square, underwent significant renovation to accommodate the construction of the modern Piazza Roosevelt in 1935.
During the 19th century, Ferdinando Marescalchi spearheaded the palace's restructuring and modification, notably refurbishing the main floor apartment decorated by Felice Giani. Additionally, in 1811, he initiated the development of an English garden on the western side, resulting in the demolition of several buildings along the present-day Via Cesare Battisti. His son Carlo continued the garden's construction and erected a protective wall to shield it from prying eyes; however, by the latter half of the 19th century, the Marescalchi family's fortunes began to decline, culminating in the sale of the palace to the Orlandini family in the early 20th century.
The palace endured damage during two separate bombings in World War II, particularly impacting its western section, where renowned Italian inventor and electrical engineer Guglielmo Marconi was born. In 1961, the palace's owners sought its demolition, but the Ministry of the Treasury intervened, acquiring and restoring it. Subsequently, a portion of the palace was allocated to serve as the headquarters for the Superintendency for Environmental and Architectural Heritage of Emilia. Inside are paintings by Tiarini, Reni and Tibaldi and a unique oval room with intricate adornments.
