Palmiarnia Poznanska (Poznan Palm House), Poznan
Spanning an over a century history, the Poznan Palm House, holds the distinction of being the largest palm house in Poland and one of the largest in all of Europe. Designed by S. Cybichowski, the Palm House was originally constructed in 1929. However, its most significant transformation occurred during extensive remodeling carried out between 1982 and 1992.
Today, the Palm House boasts an impressive collection of plants, making it one of the most significant institutions of its kind in Europe. Within its lush greenhouses, visitors can explore a diverse array of plant life, including approximately 17,000 specimens representing 700 different species and subspecies.
The collections within the Palm House encompass plants from various climatic regions, ranging from the Mediterranean to subtropical, tropical, savannah, and desert climates. In addition to its botanical treasures, the Palm House also hosts an extensive collection of exotic fish, adding to the overall allure of this botanical paradise.
Nestled within Wilson Park, visitors not only have the opportunity to explore the Palm House but also a unique historical site. A public air raid shelter, built in 1944 for the German residents of the luxurious apartment buildings on Matejki Street, can be found in close proximity. This hidden underground facility was only discovered during the park's renovation work, offering a glimpse into the wartime history of the area.
Please note that guided tours are required for exploring the Palm House and the air raid shelter, ensuring a rich and informative experience for visitors.
