Paramount Theatre, Seattle
Situated at the intersection of 9th Avenue and Pine Street, the renowned Paramount Theatre of Seattle holds a distinguished position on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States. It is both owned and operated by the Seattle Theatre Group, a nonprofit organization.
During the late 1920s, Paramount Pictures, the esteemed Hollywood company, established theaters in numerous cities across the United States as part of its efforts to broaden its distribution network. In 1928, the Paramount Theatre in Seattle welcomed movie enthusiasts through its doors. The architectural design of the theater was crafted by Cornelius W. and George L. Rapp, hailing from Chicago, while Benjamin Marcus Priteca, a Seattle-based architect, contributed to the development of the surrounding apartments and offices.
The theater's grand auditorium boasts an impressive capacity of approximately 4,000 seats, featuring a unique convertible floor that can be transformed into a ballroom—an innovative concept at the time. Additionally, the venue is adorned with an original installation of the Wurlitzer Theater pipe organ. Evolving from its early years as a cinema, the Paramount Theatre has now emerged as a prominent destination for performing arts, hosting acclaimed shows and music concerts.
The main floor of the theater, referred to as the orchestra level, presents freestanding chairs within the orchestra pit. Alongside this, the facility offers seating in the balcony area as well as a cabaret-style arrangement on the main floor. Noteworthy musical performances held at this esteemed venue include the legendary 1972 gig by Grateful Dead and Madonna's early concerts.
