Parco del Monte Subasio (Monte Subasio Park), Assisi

The Monte Subasio Park holds a special place in the heart of Franciscan memories, as it encompasses not only the historic center of Assisi but also the natural landscapes that inspired Saint Francis' love for creation. From the olive groves on the slopes to the vast meadows and pastures at the summit, and the dense oak and holm oak forests in between, the park showcases a diverse array of natural beauty.

In addition to its scenic landscapes, Monte Subasio offers superb views of the high Apennines in the east. It also contains many sites of historic and religious significance, including the Hermitage of the Prisons ("Eremo delle Carceri"), nestled within a forest of centuries-old trees and among the places richest in Franciscan memories and inspirations.

The distinctive pink stone from Subasio has been used since ancient times to build not only the Hermitage and the historic center of Assisi but also abbeys, churches, and small fortified villages. At sunset, the stone takes on a special amber color, enveloping the city, countryside, and surrounding landscape in a serene ambiance, accentuating its ascetic dimension.

The municipalities of Spello, Nocera Umbra, and Valtopina are also part of the park area. Notable sites in these towns include the Church of Saint Mary ("Santa Maria Maggiore") in Spello, with wonderful frescoes by Pintoricchio, and the Church of San Francesco in Nocera Umbra, which bears witness to the cult devoted to the saint.

The park features a well-developed network of trails, making it ideal for hiking and trekking, while mule tracks and dirt roads provide suitable terrain for mountain biking and horseback riding. Thanks to its favorable air currents, Monte Subasio is also popular for sports such as paragliding, hang gliding, and kite flying.
