Park Theater Eindhoven, Eindhoven

Park Theater Eindhoven, Eindhoven

Park Theater Eindhoven is the name used for the theater building that is situated just south of the center of Eindhoven. The theater owes its name to this location. Before the renovation, which was completed in early 2007, the name was Stadsschouwburg Eindhoven.

The Stadsschouwburg, designed by Cees Geenen and Leo Oskam, was opened on 2 October 1964 in the presence of Princess Beatrix. At the time, the municipal theater was very modern and quite unique in Europe. The first director was Ben Ullings. Ullings attracted a lot of innovative theatre, and this even resulted in a large influx of theater lovers from Belgium. Ullings has been succeeded by Jan Reijs. After Reijs, a director was appointed who got into a labor dispute with the municipality of Eindhoven. In 1992, Fons Bruins was appointed director.

At the end of the 1990s, the desire to build a new hall grew. Ultimately, the multifunctional Philips Hall was built and the former Grote Zaal and Globe Theater were renovated. The architect for both the renovation and the new construction was the Eindhovens Bureau Architecten . The Parktheater was opened on January 16, 2007. The new building was an initiative of Fons Bruins who retired on September 3, 2007 after 14 years as director. Bruins was well able to get sponsors for the project. On September 3, 2007 he was succeeded by the current director, Giel Pastoor, former director of theater De Tamboer in Hoogeveen .

The Municipality of Eindhoven designated the Parktheater as a municipal monument in March 2016 in order to protect it against demolition.
