Parroquia de Sant Agusti (Parish of St. Augustine), Barcelona

One of the most unique structures in Barcelona, this incomplete church exhibits a distinctive character with its jagged stone sections cascading down the left side, while the front entrance on Saint Augustine Square ("Plaça Sant Agustí") eagerly awaits the addition of a facade.

The church has a tumultuous history, having been originally associated with an Augustinian monastery and constructed over a span of time from 1349 to 1700. It faced abandonment, destruction during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714, subsequent rebuilding, devastation in the anti-religious riots of 1825 resulting in the demolition of the cloisters, and further looting and burning during the final days of the Civil War.

The spirit of Saint Augustine is most vibrant on May 22, the feast day of Santa Rita, the patron saint of "los imposibles" or lost causes. On this day, unhappily married women, unrequited lovers, and individuals facing seemingly insurmountable hardships form long queues that extend through the square and down Carrer Hospital. Each person carries a rose, which will be blessed at the chapel of Santa Rita located on the right side of the altar.
