Parroquia El Carmen (El Carmen Parish), San Salvador
El Carmen Parish is a church designed by architect Ruben Martinez, who is known for other important works like the Peace Monument, Plaza Luis Poma, and Monument to the Constitution. The church was built under the command of Colonel Leon Castillo, who promised to the Lady of El Carmen that if she kept him alive after a injury he would build a church for her with her name. In 1856 the church's construction was begun. Due to the civil war, its construction was interrupted and restarted several times. The work took many years but repairing the damage made by an earthquake was the most important.
