Partisan Memorial Cemetery, Mostar

Partisan Memorial Cemetery, Mostar

The Partisan Memorial Cemetery in Mostar holds a significant place in the city's history and serves as a tribute to the Yugoslav Partisans who lost their lives during World War II in Yugoslavia. Situated on Bijeli Brijeg, this memorial cemetery was constructed in 1965 and stands as a testament to the architectural, aesthetic, and landscape design.

The initiative to create the Partisan Memorial Cemetery was spearheaded by politician Džemal Bijedić, and the design responsibility was entrusted to the renowned Belgrade architect Bogdan Bogdanović. On September 25, 1965, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Mostar's liberation and the establishment of the Mostar Battalion, the memorial cemetery was inaugurated.

Unfortunately, the cemetery suffered extensive damage during the 1992 war and subsequent dynamiting. The ravages of war, coupled with neglect, vandalism, and devastation, led to the deterioration of this solemn site in the years following the conflict.

In 2005, various components of the complex and the surrounding greenery were reconstructed, breathing new life into the site. On May 9, 2005, the Partisan Memorial Cemetery was formally reopened. The significance of the cemetery was officially recognized in 2006 when it was designated a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
