Pasadena Presbyterian Church, Pasadena
Pasadena Presbyterian Church, the first church established in Pasadena, was founded in 1875. Situated on East Colorado Boulevard, the church has a rich history and has been a cornerstone of the community for nearly 150 years. The church's current Modern-style sanctuary, designed by architect John Gougeon of Gougeon-Woodman, was completed in 1976 following the destruction of the original 1908 building in the 1971 Sylmar Earthquake.
The present sanctuary, although modest in appearance from Colorado Boulevard, features a dramatic multi-tiered bell tower. Its true architectural beauty is revealed from Madison Avenue, where a soaring half-arch and tall vertical stained glass window create a striking visual. Inside, the sanctuary can accommodate 800 people and is renowned for its excellent acoustics, designed specifically for a massive 6,000-pipe organ salvaged from the previous church.
Pasadena Presbyterian Church has been innovative throughout its history, including the establishment of its radio station, KPPC, in 1924. Today, it continues to broadcast its Sunday services live via a cable television station. Additionally, the church houses the offices and rehearsal spaces of the Los Angeles Children's Chorus (LACC), further cementing its role as a cultural and community hub.
The design of the sanctuary reflects an Expressionist reinterpretation of traditional Gothic motifs, embodying the church's forward-thinking ethos while honoring its historical roots. This blend of modern and traditional elements underscores the congregation's commitment to both innovation and heritage in the Pasadena community.
