Pavilion Le Corbusier, Zurich

Pavilion Le Corbusier, Zurich

The Pavillon Le Corbusier stands as a Swiss art museum located in Zürich-Seefeld at Zürichhorn, dedicated to showcasing the works of the renowned Swiss architect Le Corbusier. Back in 1960, Heidi Weber envisioned establishing a museum designed by Le Corbusier himself, aiming to display his artworks within an environment crafted by the architect. Initially known as the Centre Le Corbusier or Heidi Weber Museum, the building was handed over to the city of Zürich in April 2014 and subsequently renamed in May 2016.

This architectural gem represents Le Corbusier's final creation, symbolizing a significant departure from his earlier use of concrete and stone, now employing steel and glass, indicative of his forward-thinking approach during the 1960s. Le Corbusier ingeniously utilized prefabricated steel components along with vibrant enamel plates adorning the central core. Moreover, he designed a distinct 'free-floating' roof to shield the structure from the elements.

The Centre Le Corbusier embodies the concept of a Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), epitomizing a holistic work of art that seamlessly integrates Le Corbusier's architecture, sculptures, paintings, furniture designs, and writings. This amalgamation is unparalleled, possibly making it the sole existing structure of its kind globally.
