Pepperkakebyen (Gingerbread City), Bergen
Gingerbread City (Pepperkakebyen) in Bergen holds the title of being the world's largest gingerbread town. Situated at Kode Permanenten, this annual exhibit transforms into a miniature version of Bergen, crafted entirely from gingerbread. The tradition started in 1991 and has since become a cherished part of the Christmas festivities in Bergen.
The city features an array of gingerbread constructions, including houses, trains, cars, ships, and even notable local and international buildings, all made from gingerbread. Every year, local kindergartens, schools, families, companies, and various organizations contribute to the creation of this festive display. Initially displayed in the City Pavilion at Torgallmenningen from 2007 to 2013, and earlier in the Gallery from 1991 to 2006, it found a more permanent home in the former Sentralbadet building from 2014.
Each year, the mayor of Bergen officially opens Gingerbread City, marking the start of its public display from mid-November through December. An exception occurred in 2010 when Mayor Gunnar Bakke could not perform the opening duties due to being away in Aberdeen.
Gingerbread City is not only a delightful spectacle but also serves a charitable purpose. The proceeds from the exhibit are donated to a relief agency that supports children in need, underscoring the community's commitment to generosity during the holiday season.
This unique tradition reflects the deep-rooted love of "pepperkaker," or gingerbread cookies, in Norwegian Christmas culture. These cookies are traditionally shaped into various forms like men, women, angels, reindeer, hearts, and bells, adding a flavorful and festive touch to the holiday celebrations.
Pepperkakebyen remains a beloved holiday tradition in Bergen, enchanting visitors with its sweet constructions and festive spirit, and continuing to spread joy and warmth during the Christmas season.

Bergen's Architectural Jewels
Surprising as it may appear, but the seemingly small city of Bergen for centuries had been the largest in all of the Nordic countries. It also remained so for Norway until the 1830s. Apart from being the country's former capital (back in the 13th century), Bergen is well-known primarily for its astoundingly beautiful cityscape, formed by the backdrop of mountains and serene waterfront, much... view more
