Peranakan Museum, Singapore

Peranakan Museum, Singapore

The Peranakan Museum, situated within Singapore's Museum district, serves as a dedicated institution showcasing the rich heritage of the Peranakan culture in the region. The Peranakans are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who arrived in the Nusantara, Malaya, Java, and various other locales during the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

Established in 2006, this museum stands out as the sole one of its kind globally, with a primary focus on delving into the historical aspects of Peranakan cultures in Singapore and various other Peranakan communities across Southeast Asia. It is situated within the premises of the former Tao Nan School building on Armenian Street.

On January 1, 2006, the museum temporarily closed its Armenian Street wing for a significant renovation. During this closure, the museum's management opted to center its new exhibition space around the theme of Peranakan culture within the Tao Nan School premises. This strategic decision allowed the museum to house the world's most remarkable and extensive collection of Peranakan artifacts and wares.

Additionally, the renovation resulted in an increase of 25 percent in exhibition space, enabling the museum to present various facets of Peranakan domestic life and lifestyle in a more comprehensive manner. Furthermore, plans were made to incorporate Peranakan-themed eateries and shops in the row of four adjacent shop-houses next to the museum building.

The museum celebrated its official opening on April 25, 2008, featuring ten permanent galleries that showcase key aspects of Peranakan life. One of the museum's highlights is the Peranakan Wedding Bed, which once belonged to Mrs. Quah Hong Chiam of Penang and was the very bed on which she gave birth to her first seven children out of a total of eleven.
