The Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) in Perth is dedicated to the presentation of contemporary visual and performance arts. Originally serving as the Perth Boys' and Girls' School for four decades, this building is a testament to the architectural and educational heritage of the region.

Architecturally, the PICA building is an exemplar of the Federation Free Classical style, which was prevalent in Australia around the time of the federation in 1901. This style is characterized by its blend of classical architectural elements with a more relaxed, Australian sensibility. The building's exterior features striking yet balanced decorative elements, reflecting its serious academic past. It emphasizes separate entrances for boys and girls, underlining the significance of education with detailed architecture.

Constructed with face brick in stretcher bond, the building rests on a foundation of random stone plinth, which varies in visibility around the building's perimeter, particularly on the northern side where it is below the current street level. The attention to detail is evident in the decorative work around the eaves, entry porches, and window openings, which adds to the building's aesthetic appeal without overwhelming its academic dignity.

The building's roof, crafted from corrugated iron in a hipped style with a raised central section, likely lights up the central gallery. Timber slats support wide eaves, enhancing the building's look and functionality. Despite recladding, original downpipes and rainwater heads remain, adding authenticity to restoration efforts.

PICA runs a continuous series of exhibitions, performances, and screenings throughout the year, along with providing opportunities for public education.
