Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, La Spezia
In the evenings, Piazza Garibaldi is a lively area, with a number of casual restaurants. It’s not far from La Spezia train station (10-15 minute walk). Five different streets meet at this point to form the piazza. It lies at the intersection of Via del Prione, Via Fiume, Via Lazzaro Spallanzani, Via Garibaldi and Via Torino. The centre is dominated by a modern abstract fountain and sculpture which was placed here in 2002. Made of white Carrara marble, it is particularly pretty at night when it is illuminated and the marble takes on a gentle luminescent glow.
This is a fairly active piazza in a city that surprises. La Spezia is a great place to visit and spend time exploring. Piazza Garibaldi is one of several interconnected public spaces along a pedestrian zone through the city. Lookng forward to returning someday soon.
Open plaza within a pedestrian area with this interesting fountain at the centre. A nice, modern feature on the edge of the historic centre.
The Dialogue Fountain is in the center of Piazza Garibaldi in La Spezia . Made of Carrara marble by the sculptor Viliano Tarabella, it was inaugurated in 2002. The design choice of architects Antonio Leone and Cesarina Zanetti proposed a monument intended as a place for rest, sitting and interaction between passers-by, at the beginning of the historic Via Prione. For this purpose, the entire ring of the pool balustrade, deliberately smooth, is made available as a seat near the water itself, the clarity of which is enhanced by the light color of the bottom of the pool. At the center of the basin is the sculpture of Tarabella : a hollow body which resolves, in abstract forms, the theme of two large sails which interpenetrate and converge upwards, where the jet of water is. The night lighting gives a special effect of reflections to the monument. ***PH***
