Pitt Building, Cambridge
The Pitt Building is steeped in Cambridge’s publishing and academic history. Commissioned in 1833, it was named after William Pitt the Younger, an undergraduate of Pembroke College who, at the age of 24, became Britain’s youngest Prime Minister. Creator of the building, Edward Bloor, the official architect for Queen Victoria, is also credited with designing Buckingham Palace in 1850.
The Pitt Building is sometimes referred to as “fresher’s church” as many new Cambridge students believe that it is a temple. Originally, however, for more than 100 years, the building had housed the printing and office headquarters of Cambridge University Press, the University’s publisher. The historic Oriel Room is where every book published by Cambridge University Press still receives its official stamp of approval.
Despite being renovated to the highest modern standards, the Pitt Building has retained its architectural value. Located in the heart of Cambridge, it combines a great deal of historical atmosphere with modern facilities, and today serves as a premier conference and meeting venue.
Tip:
The amazing foliage-covered facade looks incredible during autumn, when it is red. Turns back green during spring!
