Placa de Cort (Court Square), Palma de Mallorca
Placa de Cort The Plaza de Cort is a square in the center of Palma in Mallorca, where the City Council of Palma. Around this square are Carrer Colom , Plaça de Santa Eulàlia and the headquarters of the Consell Insular de Mallorca.
The name comes from the concentration of courts and curias, and other administrative bodies that were concentrated in this place. Since 1249 the jurors met in the old Hospital de Sant Andreu (where there is now the main building of the City Council of Palma) founded by Nuno Sancho in 1230. The fact that it met the main institutions of the island (The University, Great and General Council ...) has constituted it like center of the city. In fact, it is the point where the numerical calculation of the kilometers of the main roads of the island, KM 0, begins.
The square is the scene of political demonstrations, San Sebastian festivities and one of the oldest civil festivities in Europe, the Festa de l'Estendard.
The morphology of Plaça de Cort has varied over the years. In 1865 it was much smaller, the opening of Calle Colom meant the first enlargement. The most significant change came in 1922 with the collapse of the central islet where the newspaper Última Hora was located.
The main building in the square is that of Palma City Council, built in different phases between 1649 and the 19th century. The facade is the most important element and reproduces the outline of the manor mallorquina.En she can see elements that have become popular over the years as the Bank vague and sinofó s clock Figuera in the dragon and snail.
Since 1989, almost in the middle of the square we find an immense olive tree transplanted from Pedruixella Petit ( Pollença ). It was given away by the businessman Jaume Batle i Manresa. It is estimated to be over 600 years old and weighs about 4 tons.
