Poetto, Cagliari
Poetto beach, 8 km long, is on the doorstep of Cagliari city, around 10-15 minutes by bus from central Via Roma. Despite the huge number of tourists every year, this long golden sand beach is unspoiled and in very good shape. Walking and running along this wide long beach is always relaxing while enjoying the view of the Mediterranean Sea, Poetto beach is also suitable for families with children. Along the beach, you find many cafes, restaurants, and bars that can entertain you for your day or night. Poetto Beach is long so you will not find it too crowded except on summer weekends and in August. If you want to stay close to this beautiful beach, you will find several hotels and B&B. I suggest you rent a place along the beach if you are more into spending your time swimming and doing water sports such as windsurfing or kite surfing.
A vast and stunning city beach, with eight kilometres of coastline extending between Cagliari and Quartu Sant'Elena comprised of soft sand, blue sea, relaxation, fun and sport. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the inhabitants of Cagliari favoured the western part of the Golfo degli Angeli. Then, little by little, as they began to appreciate the white dunes, the first establishments, a kiosk and a summer camp were created and, lastly, the famous multicoloured bathing huts were built (and then completely removed in 1986). Over time, the area has become increasingly populated, earning it the name of 'Spiaggia dei Centomila' (beach of a hundred thousand). Today, the Poetto is the undisputed 'sea' of Cagliari's hinterland, one of the largest city beaches in Europe, as well as the most beautiful and frequented island, a favourite destination for those visiting the capital in summer or any sunny day throughout the year, also being a perfect stop to enjoy a coffee or aperitif accompanied by the sea breeze. It is rare to find such an extensive stretch of white sand, a Caribbean sea and all the services and entertainment that you could wish for just a short distance from the centre of a splendid town.
Poetto is a beach in the metropolitan city of Cagliari , it falls within the municipal territory of its most important inhabited centers and is therefore divided into Poetto di Cagliari and Poetto di Quartu Sant'Elena. Nicknamed Centomila beach due to its large extension and capacity, it is an important tourist location and one of the main places of summer nightlife in the city and the wider area. The beach is a thin strip of sandy beach approximately 8 km long, extending along the coast of the Gulf of Angels between the Sella del Diavolo in the Cagliari area and the Quartese hamlet of Margine Rosso , delimited in the upper part by the Molentargius salt pans. The name derives from the Sardinian Poétu, in turn dependent on the Catalan Pouet , diminutive of Pou , meaning well. The Catalan name Pouet is already attested in the drawings of Rocco Cappellino in Description of Sardinia of 1577.
Poetto is Cagliari’s main urban beach. Yet, it is much more than that – at least to us living here. Known as the “Spiaggia dei Centomila” (the hundred-thousand beach, which refers to the supposed amount of people it can hold), Poetto is hardly the most beautiful beach in Sardinia, but we in town love it through and through. It’s where we go for a quick beach getaway in any season; it’s our escape from the buzz and stress of city life – right in the city; it’s where we go to exercise at any time of day and throughout the year. In other words, we cherish it and we wouldn’t exchange it for any other place. One thing I have to admit though, Poetto holds many a secret – and most of us in town know actually very little about it. ***PH***
