Port Discovery Children's Museum, Baltimore

Port Discovery Children's Museum, Baltimore

Port Discovery Children's Museum is a highly regarded non-profit organization that operates out of the historic Fish Market building in Baltimore. The museum boasts 80,000 square feet of space spread over three floors that feature interactive and educational exhibits and programs designed specifically for children from birth through age 10 and their caregivers. The museum receives more than 265,000 visitors annually.

The museum's roots can be traced back to the original Baltimore Children's Museum, a Baltimore City agency founded in 1976 that was originally housed in The Cloisters, a historic property located in Baltimore County.

In 1990, the Baltimore Children's Museum formed its own non-profit corporation and merged with the Maryland Children's Museum. The merged entity's Board of Directors, along with Baltimore's Mayor Kurt Schmoke, made the decision to relocate the museum to downtown Baltimore to reach a wider audience.

The relocation proved to be a wise move as the museum has since become a popular destination for families from all over the region. The museum underwent major renovations in 2019, which included the addition of several new exhibits as well as a lunchroom and additional restrooms. The renovation cost $10.5 million and was aimed at making the museum even more engaging and accessible for visitors.

Port Discovery Children's Museum is a valuable asset to the city of Baltimore and the surrounding region. Its commitment to providing interactive and educational exhibits and programs for children and their caregivers has made it a beloved destination for families and educators alike.
