Port of Munster, Munster
Stadthafen I, known as Hafen Münster, is an inland port of the city of Münster in Westphalia. It was opened in 1899 and branches off the Dortmund-Ems Canal as a branch port. First run as a municipal operation, it was handed over to the Stadtwerke Münster in 1953, which has been running it ever since.
From the beginning, the port was mainly designed for imports. It was badly damaged in World War II, but reopened in 1946 to receive urgently needed building materials for the city's reconstruction. Today, the harbor has become almost meaningless as a trading center for goods. Instead, mainly cultural and gastronomic establishments have settled on the north bank, forming the so-called "creative quay".
The size of the port area corresponds to the size of the old town of Münster.
