Porta dei Cappuccini (Gate of the Capuchins), Assisi

Porta dei Cappuccini (Gate of the Capuchins), Assisi

Down the street from the city's medieval fortress of Rocca Minore, the Gate of the Capuchins is among the eight entryways of Assisi's old defensive walls. Its square tower features an internal staircase, although the top has suffered some collapse over time. An internal side of the tower is adorned with a niche housing a statue of the Madonna.

This gate offers convenient access to trails and a road that runs parallel to the Abbey of the Hermitage of the Prisons ("Eremo delle Carceri"); it also leads to the summit of Mount Subasio.

Keep an eye out for a sign that commemorates the twinning of San Francisco, California, and Assisi as sister cities, underscoring the historical and cultural connections between the two places.
