Portland Art Museum, Portland (must see)
Occupying two four-floor buildings, this is quite the comprehensive art museum for a city of Portland's size, and the oldest of its kind on the West Coast. The longer-standing building houses special exhibitions as well as Asian, Native American, Pacific Northwest, and European art, while the newer building connects via an underground corridor and features modern/contemporary art as well as Impressionist masterpieces. At least one major touring exhibition is usually on show, but the PAM's own collection, spanning 35 centuries and featuring more than 42,000 works of art, is quite impressive!
The museum acquired its first original painting (by Childe Hassam) in 1908, the year it was created. Perhaps that influenced what feels like a strong emphasis on 20th century work, now mostly housed within the lively Jubitz Center for Modern and Contemporary Art. Among other high points are the beautiful and skillfully crafted exhibits at the Center for Native American Art (with accompanying informative text and regional cultural explanations), as well as a portrait of George Washington by Rembrandt Peale, and van Gogh's 'The Ox-Cart' – an odd work, with (uncharacteristically for him) lots of black, but which is interesting to see. Also, for any art lover looking for an upscale gift or memento from a trip to Portland, the well-stocked museum shop at the PAM is one of the more exceptional anywhere.
All in all, a true cultural asset that's worth preserving for future generations to enjoy.
Tip:
Arrive early to beat the crowds that arrive at noon, get the elevator, head to the 4th floor and start the visit top/down. You will have the galleries just for you. Afterwards, take a moment to linger in the peaceful outdoor sculpture garden.
