Ports of New York Winery, Ithaca

Ports of New York Winery, Ithaca

Nestled on the inlet of Cayuga Lake’s south shore, Ports of New York Winery is a small yet remarkable urban winery in Ithaca. Founded in 2011 by Frederic R. Bouché, this artisanal winery carries a deep-rooted legacy that traces back to Bouché’s great-grandfather’s winemaking in early 20th-century Normandy. Specializing in port-style fortified wines, Ports of New York produces Meleau Specialty Wines and Quotidian Table Wines exclusively from Finger Lakes AVA-grown Vinifera and hybrid grapes.

At the heart of the winery’s craft is the meticulous French port method, which results in wines that are neither traditionally sweet nor dry but belong to a distinctive category of spirited fortified wines. The Red Meleau is known for its velvety texture and low tannins, making it an excellent pairing with strong cheeses, charcuterie, or rich desserts like chocolate and dried fruits. Meanwhile, the award-winning White Meleau, with its full-bodied elegance, complements pâtés, fresh fruit, and soft cheeses. Each batch undergoes a careful aging process-at least four years-to develop its rich and layered character.

Visitors to Ports of New York are treated to more than just tastings. The winery’s intimate cellar doubles as an exhibition space, displaying a fascinating collection of antique French wine equipment from Bouché’s family history. Tours offer a hands-on insight into the vinification process, particularly the intricate steps involved in producing fortified wines. For those new to the category, the experience is often an unexpected delight, as Bouché himself notes that most guests leave with a bottle in hand.

Ports of New York blends tradition with innovation, offering uniquely mellow yet spirited wines. Tastings and seasonal offerings are available, with large groups welcome by appointment. Whether for a cozy evening or a refined pairing, the experience is steeped in heritage and craftsmanship.
