Praça de Carlos Alberto (Carlos Alberto Square), Porto
Carlos Alberto Square (Praça de Carlos Alberto) in Porto is a space rich in history, serving as a market and a central gathering place since its inception. The square is named in honor of Carlos Alberto, the dethroned king of Piedmont and Sardinia, who sought refuge in Porto in 1849. His first residence was the Palace of the Viscounts of Balsemão, located on the east side of the square. Previously, this location was known as Largo dos Ferradores, reflecting the horseshoe forges once concentrated there.
Throughout its history, Carlos Alberto Square has witnessed various transformations. In 1874, Porto's first American-style car drove through this square, marking its connection to the city's modern developments. By the early 19th century, the square became home to several monuments, including a notable work by sculptor Henrique Moreira, commemorating Portuguese soldiers who fought in World War I, particularly those who fell in the infamous Battle of La Lys.
A distinctive feature of the square is its connection to craftsmanship and trade, having once hosted the Feira da Caixas, a market where carpenters packed bags for emigrants traveling to Brazil. The square underwent a significant change in 2001 with the construction of an underground car park, subtly altering its layout.
On the northern side of the square stands the grand Palace of the Viscounts of Balsemão, which became the temporary residence of King Carlos Alberto during his exile. This 18th-century building, once a bread-and-breakfast establishment, now houses a fascinating Portuguese Coin Museum. Nearby, the intriguing Material Bank museum offers a collection of exterior architectural decorations, such as porcelain statues, vintage shop signs, and the iconic Azulejos (Portuguese tiles).
Carlos Alberto Square is a charming and historically rich square that has evolved from a market and forge center to a cultural and commemorative landmark, all while maintaining its connection to Porto's craftsmanship and architectural heritage.
