Promthep Lighthouse, Phuket
The Promthep Cape or Laem Promthep is the rocky headland located in the southern area of the island of Phuket. The Cape is locally referred to as “God’s Cape” since “Prom” is a Hindu God symbolizing purity and “Thep” is God in Thai. This hill, jutting out into the sea is a paradise for artists, photographers and all the nature lovers. On top of the hill is a lighthouse and a shrine (Buddhist altar) which has several elephant statues and carvings. Near the parking lot stores sell items which are made out of shells, shirts, souvenirs, hats, etc. You can also find restaurants and coffee shops at the Promthep Cape.
A walk through the rocky path all the way till the end of the Cape is a great experience for one and all but must not be taken by the light-hearted. The Promthep lighthouse is located on this rocky hill and is at a height of 200 feet from the sea level. The spectacular view of the sunset, the swathes of tropical lushness and the cycloramic view of the southern island can be captured very well from the top of the lighthouse. Along with a viewing platform the Promthep lighthouse also called the Kanchanaphisek Lighthouse houses a nautical museum.
