Public Library Stuttgart, Stuttgart

Public Library Stuttgart, Stuttgart

The Public Library Stuttgart operates under the city’s cultural office, encompassing the central library, 17 city district libraries, and two bookmobiles. Since its establishment, the library has been a key component of Stuttgart's cultural and educational landscape.

Originally housed in the Wilhelmspalais from 1965 to 2011, the central library was relocated to a new building at Mailänder Platz in 2011. This transition marked a significant shift in the library’s physical and architectural presence. The Wilhelmspalais, constructed between 1834 and 1840 by Giovanni Salucci, had served as a historical landmark, previously the residence of the Württemberg king.

The new building on Mailänder Platz, a design by Eun Young Yi from a 1999 international competition, forms part of the Stuttgart 21 Masterplan, contributing significantly to the city's architectural and cultural renewal. The library’s structure is a striking cubic form, measuring 44 meters in length and 40 meters in height, with two floors underground and nine above. This monolithic cube integrates a precast concrete framework with glass bricks, creating a distinct and modern aesthetic that stands out as a new city landmark, particularly within the Europaviertel area.

Eun Young Yi’s architectural approach emphasizes clarity and order, with the library's layout resembling layers of an onion, where different types of rooms are systematically arranged. The building's accessibility is enhanced by entrances on all four sides, and its exterior is characterized by a glass block facade, which encases an interior glass façade. This layered design not only optimizes the use of space but also enhances the building’s functionality and aesthetic appeal.

In recognition of its outstanding service and innovative design, the library was awarded the title of Library of the Year in 2013. The Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart not only serves as a hub for literature and learning but also as a significant architectural and cultural landmark that contributes to the vibrancy and dynamism of Stuttgart.
