Radio City Tower, Liverpool
The Radio City Tower, officially known as Saint Johns Beacon, is a prominent radio and observation tower in Liverpool. Standing at an impressive height of 138 meters (453 feet) with an additional 10-meter antenna, it is the second-tallest free-standing structure in Liverpool and the tallest when antennas are included. Designed by James A. Roberts Associates, the tower was completed in 1969 and inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II.
Historic England has praised the tower’s design, describing it as a symbol of "technological bravura and spirit of the space age." This recognition led to its Grade II listing in November 2020, cementing its architectural and cultural significance.
Originally a revolving restaurant with an observation deck, the tower was refurbished between 1999 and 2000, converting the deck into office space for Hits Radio Liverpool, with studios on the lower floor. The original revolving mechanism was preserved but fixed. Over time, the tower adapted with updated lighting and signage, including the iconic "Radio City 96.7" lettering, replaced in 2024 after the station's rebranding. Dynamic lights now illuminate the structure, changing colors for events and commemorations.
Since 2000, the tower has housed radio stations like Hits Radio Liverpool and Greatest Hits Radio, producing regional and national programming. It also hosts the local 10C Digital Audio Broadcasting multiplex, with FM signals transmitted from Allerton Park. The advertising framework has featured artwork, including the "Liverpool 2018" banner and the 2017 "Making Art 4.0" exhibition by Scan and Make.
Despite its storied past, the Radio City Tower is set to enter a new chapter. In October 2024, Bauer Media announced plans to vacate the building after 24 years. The final breakfast shows from the tower are scheduled for broadcast on 24 December 2024, marking the end of an era.
